Equality Arizona Shirt Design Competition

I've been holding off on this post to see if I won, but I just found out I lost. So I'm going to share my design with the world anyway.

One of my coworkers who I really think knows everyone in the entire world, asked me to design a shirt for Equality Arizona's shirt competition. Since they aren't really known I knew it was important to stick to the letters of the organization and give it a bit of umph.

Comment and let me know what you think of this design!

Miss Phoenix & Cave Creek Sponsor Ad

Our wonderful Gerald hosted the Miss Phoenix/Cave Creek pagaent this last weekend. I am sad I had to miss it, Gerald is extremely entertaining. I got to participate a bit though.  The agency did an ad for the program to support Gerald and also to obviously get the name out there. #shamelessplug

It's a 215-Foot Wide Billboard

I'm really excited to share that the billboard Ken and I worked on for one of our agency's clients is finished and installed. If you are in the Downtown Phoenix area, check it out.

Office Holidays 2013

I talk a lot about how much I love this place, though I thought I would share it with you. Below is the video from our holiday party. It includes some of the best events we participated in this year including:
  • American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Walk
  • We made dinner for the local Ronald McDonald House
  • We adopted a family for Christmas and bought some amazing gifts
  • Participated in the 9th Annual Pat's Run
  • Won Best Dressed at AdBowl 2013
Those are just a few. Make some popcorn and sit back to enjoy the beautiful people in our office.

Also, our digital boys made a killer holiday card where you can design, print and make your own holiday ornament! Check it out HERE.

Bird's Eye View

It's truly amazing working downtown and on the 29th floor. I'm currently working on a project that will share the view I see every day with so many others.

Stay tuned to see the project develop.

ASUWRFC 2013 Recruitment Posters

I'm finally getting around to posting about this year's adventure with the ladies of the ASUWRFC. Please excuse the tardiness but this is one project I love to share.

Blair, David and I teamed up again to come up with posters that will help recruit new players to the team. Recruitment is something that is really difficult. There is a stigma of rugby that it is too rough for a girl to play or that you have to be an ogre. Neither of these are true.

We worked really hard to show the dedication, focus and drive these girls have when they step on the pitch every day through just their face. There's no ball, no pitch. Just the faces of the girls you are going to face when you play the Arizona State University Women's Rugby Football Club.

These are girls who get up every day and go to class and most of them you wouldn't think play rugby. Though they leave their hearts out there on the field when they finish a game and then go drink a beer and sing songs with the opposing team.

If you see these posters and are a college student now, go out and play rugby. If you are a parent, get your kid involved in rugby. It will help them become a better human being.

Thank you to all the ASUWRFC girls who were at the shoot and were patient while we set everything up and fearlessly jumped into not the warmest water. You are incredibly appreciated!

Collegiate Custom Lettering

One of my friends is opening her own store and I've been helping her out with the branding. One of my favorite parts of the branding is the custom lettering I've created for her.

It's a take off the traditional collegiate letters with the hope of giving them a classier more mature feel. Check out a few of them below.

Work: Season's Greetings Card

I worked on a quick digital holiday card for one of our clients. We explored multiple holiday themes and this is where the client ended up. Huge thanks to Andy and Jake who made the rocked out the animation.

Work: Update

Wow. Things around the agency have been ridiculous and I realized how long it's been since I posted some work that I've done.

First Things First Light Campaign
This campaign has finally launched after working on it for about one year. I developed the concept after thinking about the scans doctors use to see different parts of the brain activating. Since those are really not all that beautiful to look at. I decided the best thing would be to showcase the scans on the child's head in real life. This would bring some warmth and magic to something extremely scientific. The campaign consists of television, billboard, mall boards, newspaper, cinema and online.

Arizona Office of Tourism Summer Campaign
In a world of instagram photos, what's better than showing your vacation in Arizona to the world without having to do anything extra? Nothing.

I wanted this campaign to look like it was just lifted from the camera of people's vacations, so that's what we did. All of the photos in this campaign are from real Flickr users. We utilized Instagram's technology and paired it with Google Maps to allow everyone to share their vacation photos when they enable their geotag after taking a photo.

Citizens Clean Elections Commission Infograph
Being super busy in the office this project had about a two day turn around. Super quick and there was a lot of information that didn't necessarily relate to each other, but it had to be in there. One of the biggest things you see during election time are the banners, signs and other advertising methods to promote different candidates. Using that insight with the color palette nature provides I created the infograph as a long poster taking you from the sun in the sky to the grass on the ground.

US Airways 30 Days for DC Logo
I did the logo to help celebrate US Airways adding flights out of DC. The promotion spends a month celebrating with DC'ers with give-aways and a lot of partying.

Some other things that I've been working on around here include:

  • Arizona Governor's Conference on Tourism - Logo, Emails, Invites, Save the Dates, etc.
  • Arizona Ready - 2012-2013 Campaign
  • Grand Canyon University - Direct Mail, Website, View Books etc.

Work: POWER A Holiday Initiative

Betsy and I just finished another campaign. This time it's for POWER A Air Flo and Mini controllers. This campaign will focus around the holidays and consist of online and social media.

For the mini controllers we presented ideas with hot chick midgets and other really fun ideas and finally settled with the client on the idea "It's not about cute." While these controllers are smaller in size they aren't specifically made for kids or people with midget hands, they are smaller and provide a great grip for someone who likes to get in the zone and have a strong gaming experience.

Betsy and I developed the concept around getting rid of things that people found ridiculously cute, they didn't necessarily have to be miniature, but they had to be things that would give you that sweet, cute feeling like a bear, a frilly cake, skinny jeans (damn hipsters), a pinata, and party balloons.

We hired an explosives expert that was missing fingers (that's how we knew he was good) and found a legal place to blow things up. Then we went at it. It took about six hours to rig and blow everything up. Here is a compalation video of the explosions from our point of view. . .

Our Junior Media Buyer Amanda made a cake that so dense 3 bombs couldn't blow it up and there were some explosions that were so large and loud, I am shocked I still have my eyebrows.

The following videos are the same ones embedded into the site with the duck bonus deleted video.

The Air Flo work doesn't have as many great memories or stories attached to it since we used stock imagery and it was a normal design project. Though the idea behind it is something that stayed true to the strategy and research.

We found as gross as gamers get, the one social cue that is not acceptable is having a sweaty controller. This goes for when you are in competition or when you are by yourself. Sweaty palms is not hot, ever. So, we focused on the Air Flo and the one word that everyone seems to dislike or have some problem with. Moist.

We developed an opportunity for gamers to win an Air Flo controller while finding out more about what these controllers have to offer.

It was a lot of work in a ridiculously short timeframe. Though, we got it done as we normally do. Thank you to everyone that was involved in the creation.

Work: Pinnacle Online High School

We just wrapped up some work with Pinnacle Online High School. We presented three concepts and recommended one. Although they didn't choose the idea we recommended, I am happy with the end result of the concept they decided to run with.

The concept is called "True Story" not incredibly original I know, though it works well for them because it makes online high school approachable. Have any of you seen the commercial where the girl comes out in her PJs and says, "You may think I'm going to bed, but I am actually going to class."? Or the use of all the overly stock looking images? This is something Betsy and I strived to stay away from.

We partnered with photographer Blair Bunting, and cast six real Pinnacle students. I felt privileged to meet every student that day. They aren't just thinking about getting through high school to get to college, these kids are thinking about ten years down the road and their dreams are huge. They really inspired our headline "For Students of Life," it not only hit the strategy on the head but spoke true to what these kids are trying to do. The media is up now around Phoenix including billboards, in mall, radio, online, cinema and some others.

Kendra is our horse riding cowgirl and her horse, Girl, are an amazing pair. When we walked into the backyard where she keeps her horse, we were greeted by three goats, some turkeys and some other animals.

Sometimes the magic of a photo shoot won't happen until you are on set and that is so true with these two. Blair captured the love that Kendra and Girl share for each other. This is definitely the strongest shot of the group with the placement of the sun, the nice pops of color from Girl's bit piece and the overall connection Blair was able to capture on film.

Our next shoot was with Gino. He is our resident skater and he definitely has a great look to him. I seriously think we wore him out making him skate around a bowl, or maybe we just made him dizzy.  I would have been.

Immediately following Gino, we hit the stage to shoot Ashley. She is an aspiring singer following in the footsteps of her Gospel singing mother. I love the lighting colors Blair decided to use. After retouching the photos the lights look great and really make Ashley stand out beautifully on a black background.

The next  and final day of shooting we started with Chance. It was a great start to the day, the weather was nice, we were shooting at a local park and Chance was playing his guitar the whole time. He is a great musician.

Following Chance we shot Robert the basketball court. For this shoot we were missing one very important prop . . . the basketball. After our stylist went and got one for us we were back on track. Robert's shots came out tight and they had an intensity the other photographs did not.

Our final student was Emma, a single mother with a high spirited and camera loving two year old. We know with kids you get a 10-20 minute window to get in, get your shot and get out before the child's impatience sets in, so we were moving as fast as we could. As we are finishing this shot, Emma gets up and her daughter is on the bed . . . and of course now the baby wants to pose. I take one shot of her alone on the bed . . . and she wants another . . . and another. I was like why couldn't you be like this 15 minutes ago?! She was really good though and super cute.

Below are our in mall and billboards. Enjoy!

Work: PHX10K

So after a working all summer and the beginning of fall, we have finished all the pieces for the 2011 PHX10K. This project was worked on by my amazing interns and I filled in on the projects they couldn't work on. I have a strict policy that the interns can not work on work we get paid for, since our internship is unpaid.

Items involved in this project:
- Poster
- Brochure
- Info Guide
- Start/Finish Banners
- Bridge Banners
- Guerrilla (which you will only see if you run the race)
- Website Redesign (live PHX10K.com)
- Delivery Truck Backs
- Cinema (you will see them if you visit Harkins)
- Diet Pepsi/Sierra Mist Can Designs (available in stores now)
- and tying up a few other loose ends.

The interns designed and presented their work straight to the client. Since they are interns there were room for improvements when it came to presenting, but overall they did great. Marisa (AD) was used to my expectation for perfection and grew tremendously as a potential junior candidate after graduation. Madison made sure that every sentence of copy in the website made sense, though sometimes she ended up confusing herself which was quite amusing. In the end they got it done and the client is excited about the event.

Work: Local Motors Website

I know that I haven't written in a while though I am trying to get on a regular writing schedule. Once a week seems to be good, though I'm not sure what day it is. Thursday is the day I am thinking most about.

Ok anyway back on track. As you know from some of my previous posts, I've been really excited about Local Motors Rally Fighter. Well we have finally gotten all of the contracts signed and the first phase of the website finished. We did the entire site in 2.5 weeks. That includes design and coding. The reason for the ridiculous turn around time was because the Rally Fighter was premiered on Top Gear August 7th on the History Channel. (Watch the episode here.)

There will be a second phase adding some fun things and also fixing some things. Though I am so proud of my team to keep up and stay positive through a fun though sometimes hectic process.

Congrats to Kristie Fujiyama Kosmides!

One of my clients just received some well deserved news! She will be painting a 300+ foot long wall in the Honolulu International Airport. I am so excited for her and can not wait to see the finalized piece.

We just finished a polished website for Kristie showcasing some of her latest and best work. Check out her website! Also, like her on facebook!

Work: Have you seen Bret Michaels naked?

Neither have I. Though you might be seeing him in the mail this month if you are an AD creative. One of my close friends/photographer, Blair Bunting and I created a mailer to promote Blair's company utilizing one of (my opinion) his greatest photo shoots.

Blair and I always have a lot of fun and he's incredible at what he does. If you haven't checked him out yet go to blairbunting.com

Holy Fuck.

I don't believe that "hit the ground running" would accurately describe my first month at Moses Anshell. It's been incredibly busy but the best thing about it, is that the crew there is amazing. I feel like I've been friends with these people for years. It makes for a great working environment.

In the last month we have pitched 2 clients, completed multiple assignments for existing clients and won some awards. Not too bad in 4 weeks.

Here's some work we did for RSC Equipment Rental. They hold these seminars for VPs and other managers in their clientele companies. The purpose of the event is to get these guys to come and try the equipment and see what the company has to offer. Well, no one REALLY wants to go to these events except for the free food. We decided to use this as our main facet and named the event Power Lunch.

Everything about this event started to focus around the food and then, oh yea, there is also this equipment you can demo and meet the guys at your local shop. Blair Bunting, a family friend and professional photographer, did the photography and it's beautiful.

A little to the left . . .

So we had a massage therapist come to the office today. The massages were only 15 minutes but I will take it. A man with the name Yoshi just screams "My hands are versed in massage greatness."

Sheena attempted to pull a number out of the bowl. . .
Mike getting work done.
Also we launched some Booty Parlor facebook items today. The Booty Parlor Manifesto & Quiz. The manifesto serves as a movement for women to love themselves and take care of their needs. The quiz allows women to find their Mojo type and learn how to improve their sexy lifestyles. Sign the manifesto and take the quiz at facebook.com/bootyparlor. Enjoy!

Boxer Luv Logo Project

Ok so my weekend project is done, really simple but I wanted to keep it a bit classy. Something that would allow for the non-profit to possibly sell items to help raise money for the many boxers in need.

This is their current logo.
click on the image to make a donation!
This is what I propose.

For a text version:

For a visual version:

I started to think about my boxer Leroy and all the joy he brings to my life . . . then he farted. Which led me to make this proposal.

Any of you who have a boxer know what I am talking about . . . don't try to deny it. One of my favorite things about the Boxer is their tail. I give it up to my vet Dr. Campbell at the Animal Medical and Surgical Center in Scottsdale, AZ for coining the term "The Boxer Boogie", it's when the dog gets so excited he can't control his tail or rear end. I love it.

There are a lot of ideas this non-profit could do as far as marketing or fundraising. If you are interested in hearing them, let me know . . . you don't think I just give away ideas do you?

Holiday Adventure

Whew! Yesterday was C. R. A. Z. Y. The founders of High Wide & Handsome took all (8) of us took us to Napa on a day trip killing two birds with one stone. 1) to take a break and celebrate the holidays as a company. 2) allowing all of us to experience the wineries first hand, since we do their advertising.

It all started at 6:30 AM yesterday morning, Mags picked a few of us up and we hit up LAX. Just as we got to our gate they started boarding. . . you think this is cutting it close . . . juuuust wait.

So we flew from LAX to OAK, and then drove an hour up to Napa. We first visited Robert Mondavi, did the entire tour.

We then had lunch in their beautiful private dining room. We drank some great wine and over all had a wonderful time.

We then went to Chandon and toured their facilities. I learned a lot about champagne making that I never knew. We then tasted . . .

Before we knew it, it was 5PM our flight was at 7PM. So sad to say we didn't get to hit up the Bouchon Bakery. On our way back to the airport, our English driver got lost . . . and we got to the airport at 7PM. We thought we had missed our flight completely, though as we got through security (Yes, I opted out and got patted down.) Our flight was doing a final boarding call. I ran barefoot down the coradoor with my scarf, belt, half open purse and shoes in my hand. John and I were the last ones on the plane and I got the last seat. If you've ever flown Southwest you know the look I got from the people sitting in the row I went to. It's like Forest Gump Can't Sit Here syndrome, no one wants anyone to sit in the middle seat on a Southwest flight. Anyway, below are some shots from the day.

It was great and full of High Wide & Handsome memories and inside jokes.
